Pumpkin Care 101: How to Keep Your Porch Looking Beautiful All Season

One of the questions we get asked most often is:

"How long will my pumpkins last?"

The good news is that with a little care, your fall porch display can stay beautiful well into the season.

Start with Quality Pumpkins

At Three Suns, we source our pumpkins from Little Miami Farms in Spring Valley. Each pumpkin is washed after harvest with a food-safe antibacterial treatment that helps slow decay and extend its life.

Keep Them Dry

Pumpkins last longest when they're kept dry. If possible, place them on a porch, step, or surface that allows airflow underneath rather than directly on damp soil or grass.

After heavy rain, it's a good idea to wipe off excess moisture and check that water isn't collecting underneath them.

Watch for Soft Spots

Pumpkins naturally age over time. If you notice a soft spot developing, move that pumpkin to a less visible area of the display or remove it before it affects nearby pumpkins.

Protect Against Squirrels

As much as we'd love to promise otherwise, squirrels occasionally think your porch display is a snack bar.

If damage is minor, many homeowners choose to leave it alone. However, if squirrels become frequent visitors, there are a few things you can try:

  • Sprinkle chili pepper or capsaicin-based products around the display.

  • Reapply after rain.

  • Consider using Plantskydd, a natural animal repellent that many growers recommend.

Contact repellents tend to work better than scent-based repellents like peppermint oil.

Enjoy the Season

Remember, pumpkins are a natural product. A little weathering and character are part of what makes fall displays feel authentic and inviting.

Our goal is simple: help your porch look beautiful from the day we install it until Thanksgiving arrives.
